Accounting Software: The good the bad and the ugly

Over the last couple of years, we have seen a raft of new software providers in the Accounting market place.

Xero, Sage and Quickbooks are but a few of the more common ones we come across with Kashflow and others following fast behind.

What are the good the bad and the ugly? In fairness, they all have their respective plus points but it depends on your own needs and preferences.

Cloud or desktop. Your answer to this is a major factor when deciding which product to choose. Cloud is fast overtaking more traditional offerings as clients want to rely less on their own computer hard drives. Doing this also ensures that you have the latest version of the software.

To date, cloud versions tend to be aimed at small and less complex business but if you use Xero there is a vast array of add on partners who can improve or tailor the software to your needs.

Sage has been the market leader in the small business sector for many years but its domination has been thwarted by Xero and Quickbooks cloud offerings with Sage arriving late to the party with its version Sage One.

If your business is larger, or more complex, you will probably use large versions of Sage under Line 100/200. Don’t be put off by the smaller offerings they may well be able to do more than you think and are great value for money.
